The Inheritance of Wisdom.
From Maya to Oprah, and Now to All.

I have always been drawn to Oprah Winfrey. I watch her interviews, lean into her conversations, and study her perspective, partly because my mother loves her, but mostly because Oprah serves as a bridge to something even greater. Through her, I discovered the profound, enduring legacy of Saint, Dr. Maya Angelou. Wisdom is not a sudden revelation. No lesson is fully absorbed overnight; it requires deep, ongoing internal dialogue. Even at eighty, complete understanding remains elusive. If you live long enough, you realize that life is a continuous classroom.
Here are the eighteen timeless lessons passed from Saint Maya to Oprah, and now, to us.
18 Core Lessons on Life, Courage, and Liberation.
1. Loyalty to things is addiction; loyalty to God is liberation. Attachment to material items chains you, but anchoring yourself in the Divine sets you free.
2. When people show you who they are, believe them the first time. Do not make excuses for them or expect them to change. Trust their actions over your hopes.
3. Do not let anybody raise you. Own your development, guard your mind, and define your own character.
4. Stop and say thank you. Express gratitude for the rainbow hidden inside the cloud you currently mistake for a storm. Every storm eventually runs out of rain.
5. You are not in it. The cruelty or malice of others has nothing to do with you. It is entirely about the perpetrator, who tries to extract their own living from your dying.
6. Recognize the “bite and blow” of toxic people. Like rats or ducks, some humans will bite you, then blow on the wound to numb it before biting again. Call it out instantly and cut them out of your life.
7. Be observant and obedient to your calling. We all have a purpose. The only question is whether you will honor that calling or betray it.
8. Embrace ageing as a friend. Everyone alive should strive to reach their seventies. Youth is maintained not by age, but by pain, curiosity, ignorance, ecstasy, fear, and courage. You can be old at eighteen if you lack wonder.
9. Forgive everybody. Forgiveness requires intense mental gymnastics and immense courage, but it makes you lighter. You forgive to liberate yourself, though you do not have to forget.
10. Banish “I told you so” from your vocabulary. Instead, become the kind of person who possesses the humility to say, “I was wrong.”
11. When you know better, do better. Growth is a responsibility. Once your understanding deepens, your actions must elevate to match it.
12. Words are things. Words carry immense power; they can birth peace or ignite war. Maya beautifully noted that the universe was framed by the Word. Her two favorite words were Love and Murmur.
13. Never tolerate poison in your space. If a wrong is done or said in your presence, speak up. Allowing dehumanizing language into your environment lets it seep into your nervous system and blood.
14. Courage is the most important virtue. Without it, you cannot practice any other virtue consistently. Develop it incrementally through small, daily acts until bravery operates on autopilot.
15. Your legacy is every life you touch. You do not get to pick a single monument as your legacy. It is everything, especially how you treat those who are down and out.
16. Let the love of God humble you. As Maya’s mentor, Frederick Wilson, taught her: a massive, cosmic Force loves you. Love is the ultimate gift that keeps the stars in the firmament.
17. You stand on the shoulders of ancestral giants. You never walk into a room alone. You come as one, but you stand as ten thousand. Do better to honor them.
18. When you get, give; when you learn, teach. This is the natural law of abundance and the ultimate cycle of human connection.
A Benediction: Continue
My ultimate wish for you and for myself, is simply to continue.
Continue to astonish a mean world with your acts of kindness.
Continue to be a beacon of light in a society darkened by conformity.
Continue to let your eloquence elevate people to greater heights.
Continue to remind the world that no one is beneath you, and no one is above you.
Continue to take the hands of the despised and the diseased, walking proudly with them through the high streets.
Continue to let gratitude be the pillow you kneel at every single day.
Continue to dare to love deeply, risking everything for the good thing.
Continue.
